Oh No... It's A Blackout!
Apart from the fact that you should be hiding your affiliate link just so that people won't know it's an affiliate link, did you also know that product owners WANT you to hide your links too?
Strange statement... Why would that be?
You'd think that they'd be only too happy to have lots of links all over the place pointing directly to their web site. That would improve their rankings in the search engines.
Certainly if the links are on web pages, that's the case. The effect of having hundreds of links all pointing directly to their site is dynamite for them in terms of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
The problem arises when tens or hundreds of us affiliate marketers send an email out to our mailing lists.
The effects of thousands, or even tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of direct references to a domain within emails can trigger domain wide spam filters.
Think about it.
At the mail provider or ISP, the spam filters don't know it's legitimate double opt-in promotional email. They're just set to watch out for tens of thousands of emails arriving on the networks all with a similar link inside.
To a bot, that looks just like spam.
And so the domain gets blacklisted, and any email coming into the mail providers network gets deleted even before it's had time to get anywhere near a mailbox.
That's a disaster for the product owner as no-one gets to hear about their new launch.
It's happened more than once, and it's called a Blackout - a phrase coined by Jeff Walker - he's had this happen to him.
It's also a disaster for us affiliates.
There we are, promoting away, maybe sending 3 or 4 emails about the same product if it happens to be particularly "hot", and most of our emails are being deleted as soon as they enter the mail provider's network.
And then we can't understand why we're not making any sales! So we put it down to the product not being as "hot" as we thought it was.
Boom! You've Been Blacklisted!
But absolutely THE WORST THING that can happen is that YOUR email address is blacklisted too.
Think about that for a moment. What a nightmare!
The domain you're sending out your affiliate links for, triggers the domain spam filters because there are loads of other affiliates sending out their promotions too, swamping the mail services with references to the same domain.
Any email about that domain is now classed as spam by the email provider, and is blacklisted and deleted.
The natural and logical next step for any kind of decent spam filter is to assume that all the email addresses and domains that are sending these emails are also spam sources.
